Letters – Todd Klein

The book begins with a group of mysterious men doing what most mysterious men do behind closed doors which is conspiring and not to do good deeds. In fact, these men have big plans for Hitler and the entire world as it enters a forthcoming war and yet, fate has big plans for them as well. Marv Wolfman cuts to the present where we find a young couple moving into their new home, the same house where these conspiratorial men were murdered many decades past and who haunt the place currently. Enter Baron Winters whom the couple ask for help, for if anyone can help them, it is he. With this issue, Wolfman finally brings back Jack Gold, if briefly, and Vanessa Van Helsing into the story and it is good to see them back after some time away. Things are fairly status quo for Jack – he is as miserable as he ever was and being with Vanessa has not tempered him in any manner whatsoever. Vanessa on the other hand, is the happiest she has ever been in her life. She has a good life and now a man she loves more than most can claim. When the Baron comes knocking, Jack is only too glad to see Vanessa off and she is happy to go on an adventure with her friend. Wolfman puts a lot into this story in addition to the horror which is already present, namely Nazis, ghosts and time travel and it is, to say the least, a lot of fun. Once again Wolfman is joined by his long-time collaborator Gene Colan whose pencils at times, are simply unmatched. With such a wide variety of things to draw in this issue, Colan is at his best, providing a lot of flair, not to mention chills and excitement. This tale also marks the first time that we have seen the Baron on a mission and by story’s end, you are left wondering if it will be successful or not. One thing that is for sure is that if the Baron himself is involved, those against him do not stand a chance.
