The previous issue of Kamandi saw Ben Boxer irradiated enough to become a giant and go on the rampage. This book, courtesy of Jack Kirby and D. Bruce Berry find the man returned to normal thanks to the interference of Doctor Canus. It seems as if an alien being simply known as ‘Me’ was controlling him due to the fact that it was half-scared and half-angry that it could not get home as the portal to his dimension had been closed. Of late, we saw the return of Tuftan who has been acting far more abrupt with his friend Kamandi, more than likely due to his duties as a prince and the influences of his father. It is a strange Tuftan, one we have not seen previously and after being introduced to the alien being, he finally lets his guard down and he reveals himself to be the Tuftan that readers first came to know and love. With the drama, Kirby also brings in the action and there is a lot of it as a group of gorillas led by one named Ramjam, attack the Tiger’s ship while simultaneously ambushing Tuftan and Kamandi on the island. Things are not as hopeless as they seem as Kamandi manages to get himself to the alien ship where Doctor Canus and Me currently reside. Kirby puts his genius to work at this point, melding genres together to forge one incredibly fun tale. A post-apocalyptic world, talking animals, energy beings and giant monsters make this a story well-worth reading. This go-round does not feature Ben as the giant monster, but one made out of sand and it routes the apes in no short order After Tuftan and his Tigers get free, they find Doctor Canus and Kamandi victorious with the apes locked inside the alien ship. One has to wonder just a little bit, how it is that everyone keeps ending up on this particular island. At first, it seemed as if it were an unknown quantity when Ben and Kamandi first arrived, but now it looks as if it is not all that out of the way as it was made out to be in the first place. Also, what of the companions that our heroes left behind? Will they make a return and then there is the alien as well. Whether Doctor Canus can return it to its home in the stars is one thing, but what if it has to stay? Kirby has a lot of dangling threads at the moment and thankfully, as a reader, we can only assume he will get back to them at some point as he always seems to do and entertaining us all the while.
