Issue by Issue – Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth #12

Kamandi #12Writer – Jack Kirby
Artist – Jack Kirby
Inker – Mike Royer
Letters – Mike Royer

Having been captured by the Leopards, Kamandi soon meets their master who goes by the name of Sacker. Whether you consider Kamandi lucky or the opposite in the extreme, Sacker sees the worth in Kamandi and sees the boy’s intelligence as incredibly useful for his own selfish reasons. Sacker is a smart man, or snake to be specific, and if he can make use of something to his benefit, he will. Right now, that something is Kamandi and like it or not, though he might be free to roam the grounds, he is still very much a prisoner and he will end up doing what Sacker wants whether he likes it or not. Probably the most interesting thing about this entire issue is the introduction of Sacker and the realization that he might be one of the smartest creatures that Kamandi has met thus far. Where most of the species the reader has seen, whether Leopards or Tigers or Lions or what have you, none seem to possess the uncanny ability to reason as well as Sacker does. For now, he seems to be a benevolent person – as far as a slave owner can be, but it will be intriguing to see what will happen should Kamandi defy his orders. As per usual, Kamandi does try and escape and instead of just trying to bust his way out, he plans and strategizes – something we are not used to seeing from him. Usually, Kamandi runs with his emotions and almost always, they run pretty hot. At this particular time, he realizes that his situation is much more complicated than it usually is. So with some planning and a little help from Klik-Klak, the Devil that turned out to be a giant insect, Kamandi thinks he is ready to go, yet Sacker has a grasp on Kamandi that will not slacken in the slightest. There is a surprise in the book, one that the reader makes as well as Kamandi and it is a nice little bit of trickery that Jack Kirby perpetrates for the few seconds that it lasts. Great story, great action and a forthcoming race that promises to be quite exciting make this issue another win.
