Kamandi, Ben and Renzi are out gathering supplies when they are attacked by Tigers. As they try to make good on their escape, Apes show up as well and they soon find themselves in the middle of a small skirmish between the two groups. It becomes apparent that they are not going to get away and once again, Kamandi finds himself a prisoner of the Apes. Jack Kirby continues to pack each and every issue full of over-the-top action with this one being no exception. Kamandi will not be a prisoner again, not of the Apes, not of anyone and so he fights his way free and makes a startling discovery while doing so. For the most part, like every other issue, the book focuses upon Kamandi and we see little of Ben and Renzi who have also been taken prisoner. Thus far they have played an integral part of the story though, keeping our hero company in this new, big, wide world that is unlike anything Kamandi has ever imagined. The best thing about this series is that when Kamandi discovers something new, so does the reader and his sense of wonder does the same, increasing your sense of enjoyment with every turn of the page. You have to wonder though, just how many times Kamandi will be taken prisoner because if it continues, it will tend to get a little repetitive. Secondly, it is a little strange that the Tigers and the Apes will be talking like Kamandi is not even there, surprised that he is able to talk as they do and yet constantly ignore him until he does something they do not like. At that point, the beasts always resort to the most violent option available instead of just being civilized and having a conversation. Sure, it would make for a pretty boring title if all Kamandi and the people who run the land did was talk, but you have to figure that someone will at some point. Perhaps it will be that Tiger Prince he met in the Ape prison, maybe not, but it should be fun to see what happens when someone actually treats him like the man that he is.
