We all thought that Caleb was creepy last year for his obsession with Amber. We thought that nothing could top that obsessive behaviour. Until now. We’ve known for a while that Austin has a thing for Liz. He’s admitted that he could see himself giving up his game for a woman. But now he’s taken things a step (or ten) further. He tells Liz that he’s planning on letting Jason in on the twin secret in order to win his trust. If Jason thinks that Austin trusts him with a secret this big, then hopefully he won’t target Liz, which is kind of a ridiculous idea, since Jason isn’t in charge this week anyway.

Of course, this isn’t the real reason Austin decides to talk to Jason about the twins. In reality, he really likes Liz, and Julia is in the way. He tells Jason that he wants to take Liz to the jury house and wants Jason’s help in getting rid of Julia before the jury begins. Basically, he wants to hook up with Liz without Julia blocking his path. Dude is crazy. Obviously, we can tell that Liz doesn’t actually like Austin, but I can’t tell whether or not the other house guests know her true feelings for him. Either way, the fact that his main concern seems to be hooking up with Liz rather than winning the game is pretty ridiculous.

Of course, you know Jason isn’t going to keep this a secret for long. He tells Meg all the juicy details, and then the two of them go to Shelli with the news. Since Jason knows Julia’s name, Shelli knows that he’s telling the truth about what Austin told him, and she is PISSED. So is Vanessa when they tell her what happened, and even more so, since she and Austin have been really close since the beginning of the game. Plus, the whole reason for keeping Liz safe all these weeks was so that Julia could come in, and they’d have an extra person in their alliance. If Austin succeeds in getting Julia evicted, then their plan was for nothing. After Austin lies straight to her face about what went down (he says that Jason had come to him about the twin thing, and that Jason wanted to keep Liz and get rid of Julia) Vanessa decides to let Julia in on the secret rather than protect Austin. It’s become obvious that he can’t be trusted, and Julia needs to know what Austin is trying to do.

To her credit, Julia mostly keeps calm when Vanessa tells her the news. I know if it was me, and I just found out that someone I thought was a close ally in the game was trying to get rid of me, I’d probably freak out, at least a little. But Julia keeps a cool head around Vanessa, only fuming about the situation in the Diary Room. She admits to Vanessa that Liz doesn’t actually like Austin, and the two of them decide that Liz shouldn’t know about what happened just yet, because Liz won’t be able to stay as calm as Julia did. She’ll want to go directly after Austin herself, but not in the discreet manner that they need.

Meanwhile, Vanessa and Jackie get together to talk strategy. Jackie wants to get rid of either Liz or Austin, so this works to Vanessa’s advantage. She’s decided she wants to backdoor Austin. She’s been stuck in the middle between “Clelli” and “Lizten” for weeks, and she’s finally got to choose a side. She chooses Clay and Shelli since she can actually trust them. So the three of them plus Jackie decide that Vanessa will nominate Clay and someone else to battle against Liz and the other player. They just need to figure out who should be the other players, and once again, I find myself praying that they won’t nominate John AGAIN.

My fears won’t be realized this week though. Jackie talks Becky into agreeing to go on the block with Clay, and when Vanessa and Jackie talk to James, Meg and Jason, they all agree that James will go on the block with Liz and throw the competition. After all, it makes sense that Jackie would nominate James, since he put her up on the block in week 1. Vanessa proposes a new 8 person alliance (including Vanessa, Clay, Shelli, Jackie, Jason, James, Meg, and….Becky? Maybe? I’m not sure), and they decide to call themselves Dark Moon. For some reason. If anyone understands the meaning behind the name, let me know.

So the nominations come around, and Liz and Austin are both nervous for her. Austin doesn’t want to see his love go, and Liz is so close to bringing her sister in full time. They’ve got a lot riding on this upcoming challenge.

Someone who isn’t nervous this week, finally? John, of course! We don’t see much of him this week, but he’s there to shout his exuberance at finally not making it onto the block for once. What is going to do with himself? Just sit there, he wonders?

Still firmly entrenched in game play, Vanessa assures Julia that she’s not the target, but doesn’t let her know who actually is. She wants to make sure that she’s the one the twins run to once Austin is gone. Good idea, actually. And, an extra bonus, if James can throw the challenge, then Vanessa will be dethroned and won’t have to do any of the heavy lifting once it comes time to backdoor Austin. Jackie will be the one doing the dirty work. It’s a great plan. Too good to be true.

The BoB competition, titled Flashy Headlines, requires the teams to throw paint on the walls and objects in their little white rooms to reveal letters which will show up in relief. They need to take the letters found and unscramble them to spell out the names of three house guests from last year. The first team to do so gets pulled off the block.

James really tries hard to no do much of anything. He throws paint on the same piece of wall at least a few times, but at least he’s doing something. Clay and Becky get some paint up on the walls, but not enough (probably partially because of the fact that they’re using cups to distribute the paint rather than the garbage pails that the other two are using). And instead of dousing more surfaces with paint, Clay and Becky decide to just guess the three names based on the letters they’ve got so far. And they’re wrong. A lot. It gives Liz enough time to catch up and then surpass the other two, winning the game for herself and for James just seconds before Clay and Becky are done. She also wins a dinner from Outback Steakhouse for herself, James and Vanessa.

So now the plan is ruined. Becky and Clay are on the block, Jackie’s been dethroned, and now Vanessa will have to be the one to pull the trigger, should she still be able to back door Austin. And if Austin winds up getting to play in the Veto and wins? Well, who knows what will happen then. They have no contingency plan!

Ugh, we should’ve known this would happen. This plan really was too good to be true. If this BoB had been something physical, Clay and Shelli would’ve won it hands down. I don’t even understand what was going through their minds when they decided to just guess at names rather than, oh, I don’t know, slap more paint on the walls. Ridiculous. They really only have themselves to blame. Even Shelli seemed frustrated as she watched them work.

So what’s going to happen now? My guess is that as long as Austin doesn’t win the Veto, she’ll still backdoor him. She can’t afford to get rid of Clay, so she’ll probably do everything she can to get him off the block. Plus, she’s already started a whole new alliance with Jason et al, so if she doesn’t backdoor Austin, they’ll all be after her too. So if Austin doesn’t win the veto, he’ll go home this week. If he does but doesn’t use the veto, Becky will go home. And if he does win and uses the veto to save Clay (as he should, since as far as he knows, they’re allies), then my guess is that Vanessa will nominate Steve as the replacement. Sad but true.

What are your thoughts on tonight’s episode? What do you think will happen next? Any new predictions for who will end up winning it all? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Great recap as usual! This was an exciting episode. This is why I love Big Brother.

While I prefer the UK edition for its focus on social dynamics, no talking about nominations allowed, no veto, public votes, etc… the US and Canadian versions have way more strategy and competitions. The plan totally blew up this week.

I really dig your predictions. I like your point about Austin getting veto. Clay would be smart move to get rid of. Austin needs to rally some troops, uproot his alliance, and get rid of most athletic player now. I just enjoy it when chaos unfurls, creating unpredictable situations.

And Dark Moon… is that a Pink Floyd reference? The unknown dark side of the moon, invisible from Earth?
