The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are performing for a War Bond circus show when they are suddenly attacked by Wildcat, Guardian and The Atom. Why the reason for the unprovoked hostilities is unknown but soon enough, whatever type of spell the heroes were under passes and it is time for the group to talk it out. As the attackers try and explain themselves, they go through their origins one by one and when Guardian finally finishes his, Green Lantern uses his power ring to bring forth an image in their collective minds to see what they have in common. It just so happens to be the man that trained them all and so they go in search of said man, encountering three different versions of him. Defeating them all, they gather together which almost turns out to be a mistake as the three villains become one and our heroes are in for the fight of their lives. This was a great annual telling a story so big that it would have comprised two separate issues if it had been in the regular title. Also nice to see was some JSA’ers appearing in the book instead of the regular cast. The regular staff is great, but seeing some other heroes take the lead is good for a change once in a blue moon. The issue also introduces Guardian to the series though if he becomes a regular cast member at some point will remain to be seen. While he seems quite interesting, Wildcat has always been one of the best JSA members, always fighting, always full of attitude yet compassionate and understanding when it comes right down to it. The villain had interesting powers, but sadly is forgettable and will never go down as memorable character whatsoever. Great stuff from the creative team of Roy Thomas, Adrian Gonzales and Jerry Ordway.
