Issue twelve of The Warlord is a character study of Travis Morgan through the eyes of  Mariah and Machiste watch him in a bar brawl.  Mariah cannot understand just what it is that makes the man tick. He can feel joy from the simplest things and be enraged by others just as easy and he can feel sympathy for a slain unicorn and slay the men that killed the beast without a second thought.  His personality is such that he inspires men to follow and to fight for their rights while he battles against those that would subjugate others.  In the end, Mariah and Machiste get no further than they were before in trying to figure out just who Morgan is underneath it all.  A nice break by series creator Mike Grell, and though it might not advance the ongoing journey to Shamballah and his reuniting with Tara, we get to see a little more of the man behind the warlord.
