Eleven issues in and it is time for Morgan to reminisce about his past and how he arrived in Skartaris. In 1969, while on a reconnaissance mission over Russia, he is found out and his plane damaged. While trying to get to safety, he flies over the North Pole but soon runs out of fuel and starts gliding, not realizing that he has entered a passageway that leads to the middle of the Earth. Crashing, he discovers a strange new world of perpetual sunlight and meets Tara. He also encounters his soon-to-be nemesis, Deimos, whom he will have to face more than once in the future. Thinking back to the present, he vows to find Tara no matter how long it takes.
Nice little origin issue by Mike Grell, as we learn of Morgan’s past, of what he used to do and just how he came to be in Skartaris. Interesting to see that he was always bull-headed and not just a trait he picked up in his new surroundings. It is strange that during this issue he runs out of bullets, but in every other issue he never seems to. If, and it is just a simple if, he is getting people to forge them for him along the way, it would be nice to see it at least one time. It is true that some things require a suspension of disbelief, and this is probably one of them, but by this point in time, he should really only be relying on his sword. A small quibble in what is otherwise, an entertaining book.
