A Fun Weekend Away – Girls School Screamers (1986)

A group of girls, along with Sister Urban, head out to the country to spend a weekend at an old house their school owns. During the weekend, Sister Urban wants them to log every item in the house so they can sell it. The girls intend to have a little fun, despite whatever Sister Urban says. Eventually, one by one, the girls are killed off, and a mystery is revealed both about the house and about one of the girls.

For the most part, Girls School Screamers is a pretty clichéd affair. The house, the group of teenage girls, the mysterious killer, the sordid history, and so on and so on. Featuring so many of the tropes movies like this often sport is not bad in and of itself; a movie can have all of them and still be entertaining if it has a good enough script. Sadly, this movie did not have one, so it was a meandering and fairly boring affair.  It needed more excitement, more action, more kills or at the very least, more horror and considering this was a horror movie, one would think that the more, the better.

None of those who starred in it were able to make it any better, whether that was Mollie O’Mara, Mari Butler, or Vera Gallagher as Sister Urban. The performances were nothing to write home about, but they matched the material, which was not good, to put it mildly. As a slasher, it fails where it should have succeeded. All one needed was a bunch of bodies and some blood to wash away some of the stink, yet it could not even do that. Sure, some of the girls died, but there was almost none of the red stuff, and some of it would take place offscreen, which was a definite shame. What viewers did see was okay, but nothing spectacular.

As for the mystery, it involves two figures from the past: a girl and her patron, with the former possibly reincarnated in the present as one of the girls and the latter possibly the killer. By the time the reveal rolls around, the audience cares little, so this production is tedious.

There are a few moments where it seems fun, where the girls are living it up in the house and trying to make the best of their time, and there are times when you hope Sister Urban is the killer and will take out all her frustrations on the women. Sadly, that never happens, and the ending is a little disappointing considering everything. Some of the makeup used was decent, though, and one has to give the makers of this film credit, as one can see the effort that went into this. Overall, there are some who might enjoy Girls School Screamers for what it is, while others may just find it dull.
