The final issue of Man From Atlantis by Bill Mantlo and Frank Robbins finds Mark Harris teaming up with a woman named Plaxy and her two dogs named Sirius and Cassiopeia who also just so happen to have the ability to talk. It is a strange partnership but one borne of necessity for both sides as Mark needs their help to defeat Lars Skorba and they need him for the very same reason. Soon enough, they attack and Skorba has no idea what is coming for him though he surmises that Mark must be a part of it and once he makes short work of those who dare oppose him, he will deal with Harris’ friends to prove a point. That being said, Plaxy is smarter than most would think and she outwits Skorba into thinking they were attacking on only one front when in fact, they were doing so on two with a herd of dinosaurs under her command. Mantlo writes a very fun tale packed with action while Robbins along with Frank Springer do a great job at making that action as exciting as possible. The team also manages to delve into the origins of the place where Mark now finds himself, albeit it just a little with the tale of Plaxy taking up most of it which was in itself, quite interesting. Readers learn how Cass and Sirius came to talk and just how it is that they survived in this crazy land for so long before jumping back into the thick of it where eventually, Skorba is finally defeated. It is a shame that this ended up being the last issue of the title, the readers left thinking it would continue as it would be left on a cliffhanger with the promise of more to come. Weirdly enough, in the editorial comments which would close out the letters page, they would say that the sales were there but the title would be ceasing publication anyway. A strange occurrence whatever the case but at the very least, readers would get seven issues of a licensed property they might not have otherwise and that was a good thing. Mantlo was the perfect person to script it and though the artistic teams would change more than once, Robbins turned out to be the penciller the book needed in the end to close it out. Entertaining stuff from start to finish and worth seeking out.

  1. I remember this series fondly. Not a bad way to end the brief run, but Mantlo and Robbins delivered. My dad and Ibises to watch the show together, and he bought me my first conic of the series (issue #3).
