The fiftieth issue of Infinity Inc. also happens to be an oversized anniversary issue and is packed to the gills with action, surprises, the return of a villain, a story within a story and just a bit of romance to top it all off by the team of Roy Thomas, Vince Argondezzi and Michael Bair. It all begins when Skyman finally arrives home after what seems an eternity, needing some rest and definitely feeling his age. As it is, he is surprised by some weird visions of fairytale-like folk and a surprise birthday party. The book then cuts back to Lyta and Nuklon who are at her parent’s place and The Sandman who just so happens to be Hector Hall, back from the dead with the story of how he came to be as he is and it turns out to be quite the interesting tale. From there, a hostage situation makes itself known and Infinity Inc. is determined to take care of it but once engaged, they find they are in a whole lot of trouble, more than they ever thought possible. Thomas engages the reader right from the hop and with all that was previously mentioned, he also brings back the Wizard whom Hourman had thought he had killed and who is alive, well and in charge of an entire realm along with The Lorelei. This realm has stripped the team of their powers, those that gained them from science with only Jade and Obsidian unaffected. That being said, they are overwhelmed and soon privy to the tale of just how it is the Wizard came to be co-ruler, of how the Justice Society once faced these very same creatures and it is by far, the most interesting thing that has happened in this book in a long time. One can easily see just how much in love Thomas is with the history of the DC Universe, with the Justice Society and those stories of old and how he is able to weave them into his work effortlessly, making what might have seemed ridiculous or juvenile at one point into something relevant and dangerous. Suffice it to say, with the help of Hector Hall, they manage to defeat the villains, escape back to Earth and end it all on a happy note.
