Issue by Issue – Nightbreed #12 (2014)

Writer – Marc Andreyko
Artist – Emmanuel Xerx Javier
Colours – Juan Manuel Tumburus
Letters – Ed Dukeshire

Marc Andreyko and Emmanuel Xerx Javier wrap things up in this final issue and give the Nightbreed a happy ending, something readers would never have thought to see. It begins with Boone waking up from within a cocoon, his injuries grievous enough from the previous issues that he had to go into a state of hibernation. Now, eight months later he discovers Lori has had a child, his tribe has a new home where they are safe and happy and everything is right with the world. One thing remains to be done and that is to rid the world of Ashberry who has returned one more time to put a final hurt upon those he calls monsters. Thankfully, the man fails spectacularly and in the process, Boone resurrects Baphomet – damning Ashberry to eternal torment. It is a fun enough tale and it does wrap things up with a bit of finality though one has to know that at some point, humanity is going to come knocking and this peace that they have made may not last. As a final issue, the book does its job and the creative team has done what they needed to do but it feels like not only this issue but this series could have been a lot more than what was realized upon the page. The book could have been epic, delving into the history of the Breed, making Ashberry a credible threat instead of a simply lunatic gone mad and the search for a home away from humanity a great journey. Overall, it was fun and it was nice to see Clive Barker’s creations live upon the page once again but it all felt a little hollow, there simply needed to be more to satiate both those fans who loved the property and those new to it. Hopefully one day it comes back again and is given all the love and care that it deserves with this series merely being a gateway towards the next step.
