Boone is being shown the ropes around Midian from Lylesburg as well as getting a history lesson of the place as Peloquin looks on with a bit of disgust. The book then cuts away to 1478 where a young woman is chased through the streets of Turin while in 1968 a young priest named Walden finds himself seduced by the opposite sex. Out in the hills of Turin, the townsfolk chase the woman to a cave where she is more than scared and defensive because of the eggs she has laid, though when they hatch, the priest among them considers the children a miracle instead of monsters – a reaction she was not expecting. Meanwhile, Walden is not all that he seems as the seduction does not go quite as planned. In a book of monsters, writer Marc Andreyko introduces us to two more of a very different sort. The book, while still seeming short, is paced a little better than the last two, perhaps in part by the lack of action. By no means is it a slow read nor is it boring either as this tale of monsters and their hidden city is fascinating as it slowly unfolds page by page. Just where it is going remains to be seen at this particular moment, but so far the ride has been quite interesting. Piotr Kowalski’s art is still great to look at and not simply due to the fact that these fan-favourite monsters have come to life. His pages are often beautiful, sometimes disturbing and sometimes both simultaneously, a rarety to see from any book on the stands. This is a book that has definitely gotten better as it has moved along and hopefully it can keep it up both in terms of quality and momentum. Given the creative team and the cast, which will with a little luck, feature far more Peloquin and Shuna Sassi as it moves along as they are two of the most interesting characters to come from the mind of Clive Barker. That being said, that this book exists is a treat and one that should be enjoyed.
