Amy and Emmy thought they would investigate Carl’s house next door, just knowing that Carnelian was up to no good and while that proved to be true, the two of them would find themselves in a lot of trouble. Now death is merely a couple of feet away as the headless robot looks to throw them into a pit of fire and yet, good old Taffy – Amy’s dog manages to save them from that gruesome fate. Looking around, they notice that there is a machine that seems to hum with magic, shooting off rays in various directions and when entering one, it transforms Amy into Amethyst where she gets the idea that it must lead to a portal to Gemworld. Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn send the girls off into the unknown, Amethyst seemingly unafraid of anything that might come their way. The two girls end up in a strange realm where Amethyst is mistakenly recognized as their saviour, something she is not and cannot do at the moment, her life on Earth and on Gemworld being more than she can handle at the moment and so she and Emmy end up backtracking back to Earth in order to try again. When they do, they come upon a crystal portal, only to be confronted by Carnelian who has also been looking to get back to Gemworld. He has not been very happy on Earth as he considers it a prison and so teams up with the two girls in order that they might succeed in their quest. As it is, their efforts amount to little and go from bad to worse when they end up releasing a strange muddy substance that is blocking the passage from Earth to Gemworld, a mass that looks to envelop them all unless they can get back to Earth and shut off Carnelian’s machine. Thankfully they make it just in time and while the two girls head home, Carnelian plots his next move. Overall, this was a very fun tale though it would amount to little other than exposing Carnelian for the schemer that Amy and Emmy already knew he was. There are a couple of little asides within the story that would feature Lord Garnet, Sardonyx and Prince Moonstone – small sub-plots that will eventually play into the larger story and scenes to pique the reader’s interest.
