Blood, Nuns and Goblin – The Other Hell (1981)

The Other Hell is a nunsploitation film directed by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso that begins with horror and then devolves into a lot of slowly-paced drama with talk of devils and the supernatural events that are taking place around the convent.

Carlo De Mejo plays Father Valerio, the young priest who is sent to the convent to figure out just what is going on around the place while Franca Stoppi is Mother Vincenza who does her best with the poor dialogue given her but even then, is limited due to just that. While it all begins on a strong note, it eventually becomes something of a chore to watch, a movie where there is little to frighten anyone and no nudity to speak of, something the nunsploitation genre often featured. The film was dark and packed with shadow, usually just a little too much at times which made paying attention a must if one was to make sure they did not miss anything yet it did make it eerie at times and thus suspenseful though not overly so. There were some shock moments peppered throughout such as that when the dogs would kill a cat or the removal of a woman’s uterus during the opening but they did little to really make the film all that interesting, instead merely setting the spark within the viewer hoping that there would be more to it when sadly, that would not be the case.

What would be very out of place, almost jarringly so and yet somehow be perfectly suited to the movie was the soundtrack by Goblin, known more to collaborate with Dario Argento when it came to film. As it is, hearing their music here is not so much a surprise as it makes the audience wish they were watching a stronger picture. Additionally, all of it would not equal out to be so much as a bad film as it would be weak one, the story and the dialogue needing to be strengthened with only the music being the consistent factor throughout along with Stoppi as the focal point.

At the end of the day, The Other Hell is slightly unsatisfying as it could have been far better and felt like a waste of time both for the audience and those who starred within. but for fans of the genre they might eke out a little enjoyment from this one which was indicative but not the best representation of those pictures that would fall under the nunsploitation banner.
