While Claw the Unconquered is a sword and sorcery title at heart, David Michelinie has continued to make it a unique book by introducing a little science-fiction with the last issue and then an origin story involving a race of god-like beings with this one. When it begins, it finds Ghilkyn trying to fend off a horde of monstrosities, the man having been returned back to Pytharia while Claw was off gaining the sword called Moonthorn. Suffice it to say that Ghilkyn is not alone for very long as Claw is returned home as well and together they make short work of the creatures. There is a brief recap of what happened in the previous issue, a short cutaway to King Occulas berating Miftung yet again for his failures and then the eventual battle which readers knew was coming, that between Claw and N’Hglthss. It has been a long time coming and for what Michelinie had built up into an epic quest, it seemed like it was over quite briefly, though protracting it out would have been just as bad as well. As it is, Claw takes Moonthorn in hand and defeats the monster quite soundly, Keith Giffen and Bob Layton bringing it to life in the most fantastic of ways until it is over and Claw is spirited away once again so that he might be told of his background by those previously mentioned god-beings. It is for the most part, quite interesting and if there is one thing that this does in furthering the story, it is to make Claw a little angrier than normal and perhaps a little more obstinate while those that related the tale seem not to be done with Claw, despite Claw wanting nothing to do with them. Whether this sets up a future storyline or not remains to be seen, but Michelinie has set it up perfectly should the book go in that direction. Altogether, this issue is one step closer to closing the chapter on Claw’s first big story arc and when he finally meets Occulas in combat, there is no doubt that he will finally get revenge for all that the man has done against him.
