With this issue, Jack Kirby introduces a new plot to the ongoing saga of the Eternals and he delves further into the societal workings of the Deviants. Unlike humanity or the Eternals, the Deviants are all unalike to each other, none bearing the same traits other than being of the same race and among them, due to the unstable atoms they come from; there are deviants among the Deviants. This story looks at these unfortunates through the eyes of Kro and Thena as they make a trip back to the Deviant’s city and what Thena sees, she does not like one little bit. In addition to this new plot, Kirby also factors in one additional sub-plot involving Kro and Thena, namely the fact that the two used to be involved in a relationship and to say it is a little shocking is putting it lightly. Up until this point in the overall tale that Kirby has presented, the Eternals have been the classic good guys and the Deviants the bad. With the revelation that Thena and Kro were once involved adds a bit of Romeo and Juliet to the story, the ill-fated love affair that was never meant to be. While both Romeo and Juliet died at the end of their story, it seems that no matter how wrong their love might have been or how strongly they might have felt about the other, Thena and Kro merely stopped seeing the other, the why of it still to be explored. Kirby’s pencils are once again on full display and they could not be any better as he takes the reader on a tour of the Deviant city, much like he did with Olympus City in a previous book. What is most fascinating about it all is just how imaginative Kirby can be and how well he is able to translate that into a visual for the reader to marvel over. By the time the issue is over, Kirby has progressed the story to the point that his introduction of the mutates’ purpose has revealed itself and leaves things on a cliff-hanger, making the reader wonder if Thena will involve herself to right that which she thinks is wrong and go against centuries of custom or sit back and swallow a most bitter pill. Exciting and dramatic and all the best things that only the King can deliver!
