Jack Kirby continues to delve into his little corner of the Marvel Universe with the third issue of The Eternals and he does so through characterization and the introduction of a new Eternal. Things do begin with a bang as Arishem, the leader of the Fourth Host of Celestials has landed, ready to declare judgement upon the Earth after fifty years have passed. In doing so, he has started to erect a barrier over the Incan city and while some choose to stay, like Ajak and his team, it is not an option for everyone and Ikaris and Margo flee, leaving her father behind at his request. Though it is never explicitly shown, the time between the Celestial’s leaving and their latest arrival seems to have found the Deviants and the Eternals leaving each other to their own devices. It is only now that the Deviants have been stirred up and now they would see the humans provoked so that they might do battle with the Celestials on the Deviants’ behalf. The creatures attack Ikaris and Margo as they leave the mountains and sometime after they get themselves free, an attack on New York City begins to take place. As stated previously, there is a new character introduced named Sersi, both bewitching and a witch. It is interesting to see Margo become attracted to Ikaris and subsequently, slightly jealous when meeting this new Eternal and it does post an interesting conundrum should a love triangle between the three begin to form. Kirby’s pencils are on point and just as strong as his script which continues to paint this new world in a multitude of colours both wondrous and exciting. While the man has always been praised for his artwork, his writing can hold its own against most other writers as well. This issue also marks the debut of the costume Ikaris normally wears and it too is quite fantastic to what those would deem normal attire. This was another great issue from the King of Comics, one that finds the Deviants ready to cause all kinds of trouble for man and Eternal alike.
