Passions and tempers come to a boiling point in the finale to Beast, courtesy of Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan. The book begins with the Baron talking to a young lady about the situation in the house, namely the creature and if her friends will be able to escape. For his part, Baron Winters has no idea, but he hopes that the man that he sent to take care of it all, one Paul Brooks, will be able to do so. Tensions run high in the house and Wolfman peppers the book with enough suspense for any two stories. The mystery of the creature is no closer to being solved and Brooks is going mad being cooped up with no way out. He has never liked being locked up and the situation is untenable. What makes it even harder is the fact that half of the people who are stuck in here with him are trying to make him stay and just accept it, while others are trying to seduce him and a few want to try and escape with him. The problem is that nobody has any idea of how to go about in doing so. Everything has been tried, but soon enough, an idea comes to light and while it does not seem like it will work, Brooks remembers something that somebody said and it could mean the difference between life imprisonment and freedom. Colan illustrates the book as beautifully as anything he has ever done and the horror within is perhaps more prevalent than any previous issue in this series. It is not simply the monster that lives within the house that is frightening; in fact, it has little to do with what makes this issue as scary as it is. Sure, it does play a part, but it is the claustrophobic atmosphere that is dominant and the attitudes of all those that reside within the structure that make it a kettle about to explode. When this story first began in issue eight without any of the key players that made the first story-arc so good, it was hard to see just where this might be going. Now with the conclusion to the current tale, Wolfman has created his best story in the series yet. A truly excellent exercise in terror thanks to some of the best talent in the business.
