Evermore continues in this next chapter courtesy of Jack C. Harris and Dick Ayers and while it does not find our heroes covering much ground, it does see them facing a beast of great magnitude. Now that the companions are reunited, minus Ben Boxer and the other mutants, they must deal with the menace of the Vortex Beast – a giant creature that feeds on energy. Before it, everyone is fleeing no matter what race of creature they might be. They all know that to face the monster means death and when Kamandi and his friends try to escape, they realize that it is easier said than done, especially as Pyra’s ship is ripe with the energy that the Beast craves. With few options available to them, Pyra decides that it is up to her to sacrifice her life in order that the rest of them might live. Harris ups the danger and the drama significantly with this story and it is great to see Pyra who once used to be so hostile, now be a full member of the team and one who is willing to lay down her life for her friends. There is a fair bit of action as our heroes wonder just how they are going to escape the creature and there is a moment when Kamandi thinks that he will be able to save the day, nearly costing him his own life. While it is all very exciting, Harris is not finished with the group as he brings in Mylock Bloodstalker to keep things interesting during the conclusion to the book. Having been hired by Sacker and a number of his enemies, Kamandi’s actions have caught up to him and now he and his friends may just end up paying for them. The phrase ‘out of the frying pan and into the fire,’ comes to mind when reading this book and it could not be any better. Ayers continues to grace the books with his pencils and he draws it all quite well, enhancing what Harris has provided. You have to wonder though, with all the mutated creatures that we have seen thus far – most have just been enlarged versions of the familiar while the Vortex Beast is otherworldly, so what else lives upon this now post-apocalyptic Earth and will Kamandi be running into them? A great issue through and through.
