Kaine and Jack have been captured by the Russians, a predicament that prevents them from helping out the woman they came to rescue – Vanessa Van Helsing. At the moment she is being treated to a bit of recent history thanks to Professor Valdis, who explains to her just who she is and what she can do, which of course she does not believe. Showing her evidence of what Kaine did during his rituals and of the darkness that was inside of her, Vanessa can only gasp in shock, for if she was responsible for what happened, for the loss of life, then what hope has she? Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan bring the Professor’s schemes to the forefront at this point as he wants to use Vanessa, to unleash that darkness within her as never before so that he might control it and harness its power. She is determined to fight it of course, but with the strength of the pyramid’s psychics set against her, she finds herself overwhelmed and helpless. Reading this, you can almost guess what happens next and so it is that as that power within Vanessa is unleashed, it takes on an almost physical form and is too much for anyone to control at that point. With this revelation, Wolfman finally shows us what Vanessa is capable of, though if she herself is able to control that power within her, we have yet to see for she did not even know that she could summon it up like that. The great thing about all of this is that it is like big-screen horror put down on paper and it looks amazing thanks to the talented pencils of Colan who always seems to know just how to render a perfect scene. The horror of it all is not only present in the end result of the Professor’s actions, but the looks on the faces of those present, not to mention Vanessa. Jack and Kaine are helpless, even though the Russian men think that Jack might be the only person able to break through to Vanessa to put a stop to all of this and desperate does not begin to describe their situation. On the other side of the world, the Baron’s home is being invaded by the police who believe that he might have had something to do with Vanessa’s kidnapping and all he can do at the moment is hide as his moment has not yet come. This was an excellent issue, one of the best ones in the series thus far and one that promises a lot of action to come.
