According to Baron Winters, everything is going according to his plan, for the most part anyways. What that plan is, remains a mystery and for the reader, it is still a little frustrating to see these chess pieces that Marv Wolfman has set up go through the moves without knowing what the end goal is. Alternatively, it is also a lot of fun to see them pulled this way and that, never knowing what it is they are doing, but knowing that chess pieces are exactly what they have become. Despite all of that, Donovan Caine, whose wife was recently killed last issue, and Jack Gold agree to work for Baron Winters and seek out Vanessa Van Helsing whom the Baron confirms is related to Abraham Van Helsing. Additionally, there are two strange men who claimed to be FBI agents and having taken Vanessa, Jack is naturally curious about them and soon learns that they are in fact, not agents of the FBI. Wolfman lends a deeper mystery to this story, one which began in the first issue and how they factor into all of this, none can say except maybe Baron Winters. While this book is an incredibly moody title and being quite suspenseful as well, it makes up for the lack of horror which was present in previous issues, but is sadly lacking here. That is not to say that it may not have been lurking around the corners of the book, for when the Baron makes his way into any scene, you have to know that he brings something else with him, some hidden power and more secrets than anyone could probably guess at. A little bit of his past is hinted at here, referring to his longevity and how he might be far older than he seems. Again, nothing concrete is shown or given except the word of an old lady, but it does tend to make the reader wonder. There is a fair bit of action toward the end of the book, all of it expertly drawn by the always professional Gene Colan and it leaves the fate of Jack and Donovan up in the air, not to mention Vanessa who is still missing. A solid issue to be sure, but one that could have been a bit better.
