Issue by Issue – Doctor Strange Vol.2 #21

doctor-strange-vol-2-21Writer – Roy Thomas
Atist – Dan Adkins
Letters – Artie Simek

Instead of a new story that continues the story that Marv Wolman had previously started, readers are presented with a reprint of Doctor Strange #169 by Roy Thomas and Dan Adkins.  Said tale goes on to recount the good Doctor’s origin story which is nice to see, but a little frustrating as you were expecting something else – at least judging by the cover.  Strange’s origin is shown in full, the time when the man was a very promising surgeon, one full of ego who then got into an accident that damaged his hands.  Down and out and seeking a purpose in life, he finds the Ancient One and eventually becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, learning a little humility and gaining his confidence back as well.  Despite it being a reprint with Roy Thomas delivering a very solid script and Dan Adkins some great artwork; it simply would have been nice to continue on with the latest epic involving Clea, who is not present whatsoever in this book.  A good story at the end of the day, just one that was not warranted at this point in time.

  1. Back in the day, these were called “Dreaded Deadline Doom” issues. The creators didn’t have the issue ready so Marvel just cranked out a reprint so the book would ship monthly.
Nowadays, if a book isn’t ready, they usually just delay it and ship a month or more late when it is ready.
