Kamandi and his friends have made it beyond the radiation barrier and come upon a strange land – a land that was once called Canada. Their first task is to get to the top of the cliff that faces them now and to do that, what better way than to fly up upon a giant eagle they have captured? At the moment, there is only room for two of them and so Ben and Kamandi take up the reins and make a go of it. From that moment on, Jack Kirby’s pencils also take flight and give us some of the most exciting landscapes and creatures to have ever been seen in this series so far. Everything is gigantic, whether it be the trees or the insects and everything is as wild as can be. It is an untouched paradise, filled with monsters perhaps, but a beautiful land if there ever were one. Kamandi and Ben have a bit of a rough landing when they eventually touch down as the eagle they were flying was unknowingly dying the entire time and simply wanted to get home. While it is sad to see the great beast pass away, the marvels that surround them do not allow them to grieve overlong. There is one monster in this forest that Kirby brings back from the past, one that the reader and Kamandi had thought gone for good and that is the Sacker Company. Sacker’s is a company and a Snake that is in the business of making money and claiming as much power as he possibly can for himself. At one point Kamandi was his slave and forced to fight in his games. Reluctantly, Kamandi did so and was soon sentenced to death for it, only to be rescued at the last minute by Prince Tuftan. Out here in this strange wilderness, there is no Tuftan and the rest of their company is still stuck on the beach. So with only Ben and himself, Kamandi has no idea how they are going to put a stop to Sacker’s machinations and the destruction of this beautiful land. There is one moment where Kirby makes it a little poignant for Kamandi and it only furthers his resolve into stopping Sacker no matter what it takes. Once again, this was another truly gripping chapter in the ongoing adventures of everyone’s favourite post-apocalyptic story by Kirby and company.
