Kamandi #21Writer – Jack Kirby
Artist – Jack Kirby

Of late, Kamandi has been on his own and has found himself near a body of water called Monster Lake. It is here that Kamandi finds a strange man defending himself against some creatures that are intent on reaching a module behind him. With Kamandi’s help, they soon beat back their enemies and the module turns out to be a portable refuge for a dolphin named Inspector Zeel. The two of them are currently on their way to the big radiation barrier and the place called Seaway. From Monster Lake, Jack Kirby sends our hero and his new companions on a dangerous trip across the wasteland of this post-apocalyptic Earth in search of this Seaway place that Zeel needs to reach. Kirby does not make it easy for the characters, throwing all sorts of new and crazy things at them including creatures that roam in herds, giant frogs and a group of truly savage, primal men. It is all the companions can do to stay alive after a time and the battle against those cave-like men does indeed take their toll as Inspector Zeel’s module is damaged and the life-sustaining water that was keeping him alive is drained away. You have to find Zeel an interesting character, not simply for the fact that he is a talking dolphin, but that he seems to come from a society of them that have been able to tame humans into doing things like carrying him overland and the like. You also have to wonder just what the big mystery is that could make Zeel travel outside of his natural habitat, just what is so important to risk his life to do so. Ahab, a fitting name for his servant is a striking figure, especially when he is all decked out in his armour and Kamandi knows that if he ever found himself on the wrong side, Ahab would be more than capable of putting the hurt on him. What really made this issue special was the fact that Kirby really expanded his wings with this one. There were so many new elements introduced in this one issue that it really makes you excited for what is to come. Stunning visuals and a great story make this latest book stand out from the rest of the series.
