While Kamandi has been getting along with Sultin, he has been getting increasingly frustrated with the way that things currently are. They are not at all like the people and places he saw in the microfilm library when he was with his grandfather. Things are much different now in this present time and more often than not, he has found himself either a prisoner or a slave and he will have none of it. What finally makes Kamandi break is seeing a human being walked about on a leash by a Lion master. Compacting that is just how much the human looks pleased with himself, happy to take his master’s treats. It enrages Kamandi so much that he lashes out at the slave, not realizing that there are all sorts of different slaves trained for many different things and this one just happened to be trained for combat. Jack Kirby continues his examination of what makes Kamandi tick in another action-packed issue that finds our hero not just up against another species, but his very own as well. The Lions want Kamandi penned like the animal they believe him to be and yet, Sultin thinks there is something very unique about Kamandi, something he cannot quite put his finger upon. To that effect, Sultin arranges for Kamandi to escape and by doing so, puts his own life at risk. It is all very exciting to see Kamandi make his great escape, but Kirby is not content with ending his troubles there and so the book also sees the introduction of some Bears who are on the hunt for game to sell, with Kamandi being a prize they are unable to resist. Among the many things that Kirby does this issue, including the great characterization and the fantastic action, is bring back Ben Boxer and his friends who help to rescue Kamandi. It is great to see Boxer return as he has been one of the better supporting characters to be introduced thus far. Though it has been good to see all the different species that have inherited the world after the catastrophe, it will be quite interesting to see where it is that Boxer lives and what secrets might be uncovered there. A fun story through and through as only Kirby can deliver.
