The final issue of The Warlord’s original run to put it simply, was a disappointment. After a run that started off strong, dipped a little and came back to tell some of the very best adventures the title had ever seen, author Michael Fleisher essentially tore it all down by the end of the last two arcs and were some of the worst tales to ever be featured in the book. Mariah’s character was destroyed and was not featured in this issue whatsoever, as was Shakira’s who was also not present. Machiste was barely seen and on top of that, Morgan and Tara were portrayed as almost secondary characters in their own book to the newer people introduced in the last couple of issues. The story involved monsters and gods and the end of the universe among other things, including the fall of Khnathaiti, which was a long time coming. Fleisher even manages to tear Jennifer down a little from the great mage that she was to a woman unsure if her magic would be enough to defeat her foes. The best part of the book was the finale as Tara was finally reunited with Travis and that it was put out of its misery. Those who would end up reading this issue would find just how incredibly sad it was to see how far it had fallen over time and it is no wonder that it was cancelled when it was. By the end of this issue, it would no longer be the title that everyone would remember with fondness, it would simply be disappointing and in a way, tragic.

I agree…..this series ending was kind of a mercy killing. It certainly did not hold up to the high spots in the run in the last 6 months or so before it ended.

Disappointing final issue notwithstanding, I have really enjoyed reading these Issue by Issues of Warlord. I hope there are plans to do the same with another lesser known/appreciated titles!

It was a disappointing ending for what was my favorite series. Do you plan to do the new revival series that came out a few years back?

Yes, eventually I’ll do volumes 2, 3 and 4 but not right away.
