The Worldmerge, the spell cast by the Dire Wraiths to bring the Dark Nebula to Earth, is almost close to succeeding. It will only be a matter of time before it occupies the same space as the Earth and already, natural disasters and strange phenomena are being experienced everywhere. Rom does what he can, but he has his hands full with the Wraiths and by the end of the issue, it may all just be a little too much for our hero to handle. This current book serves two purposes – to showcase the human spirit in the face of adversity and to serve as a bit of filler before the real action starts. Essentially, this issue does not really matter in the grand scheme of things although there was a moment featuring Brandy that furthered her particular plotline, making this story worth it in that one sense alone. The one thing you can say about Bill Mantlo was that he never had to pad any of his stories either for the trade or for the sake of it. Why he did it here is a little strange, but as he never makes a habit of it, it can be forgiven though it is a little frustrating as you want him to get to the big resolution that you know is on the way. It is good to see our hero in action though; doing what is right and trying to help the people of Earth even though he could have left at any time. This was a good story overall, but one that simply felt unneeded when all was said and done.
