The Wraiths are upping their game exponentially and the whole world is in danger. One of their big moves includes taking down S.H.I.E.L.D. and their Helicarrier and it is to the Wraith’s credit that they almost succeed but the one thing that they did not count on was Nick Fury who successfully repels the attack, killing most of the Wraiths in the process though not without taking losses themselves. It is at this point that Nick Fury, Rom and Starshine go to the White House to plead their case for aid, because the evidence is incontrovertible at this point – Earth has been invaded and the fate of every nation is now intertwined. The book might have been exciting before, but it keeps getting even more so with each and every passing issue. Bill Mantlo brings his A game to the book and the war that Rom has been fighting for so many years is finally coming to head, at least here on Earth. Getting Nick Fury involved seems like the next logical progression, but it was also a nice surprise to see the grizzled war veteran make an appearance in the book. Though it might be fiction, one of the best scenes in the book was hearing the President of the United States announce that he and the leaders of other countries would be working together in peace to overcome the threat that will soon overtake them all. It is a little funny, unintended though it might be on Mantlo’s part as the one thing that would unite the world in Rom’s corner of the universe is an alien invasion. You could not see that happening now or ever in fact and despite it being humourous, it is also a little sad. All in all, this was an exceptional issue by Mantlo and Sal Buscema in a series that just keeps getting better.
