Returning to the Scene – Sorority House Massacre 2 (1990)

Sorority House Massacre 2
The second installment of the Sorority House Massacre series exceeds the first by leaps and bounds in almost every manner. Where the first movie just sort of went through the motions, this movie revels in the genre and as such, the viewer has a great time watching it. The film is still no masterpiece, but it does exceed all expectations and turns out to be a lot of fun.

Sorority House Massacre 2aUnlike the first film which was kind of tame, this one might not feature as many bodies, but it does so in a far more gruesome manner with the killings being a far bit bloodier and more violent to boot. When watching a slasher film, how the killing happens and how much blood is shown lends to the success of the film and by that alone, this film is already a winner. Going hand in hand with all the slaughter is just how much skin is on display and in this film, there is quite a bit of it, far more than was shown in the original. Here the girls take an abnormally long time to change their clothes, parade around in various forms of undress while getting murdered and there is even an exceedingly long shower scene which really served no other purpose than the obvious. But it all works surprisingly and the film is worth more than ten Slumber Party Massacres.

Sorority House Massacre 2bSpeaking of Slumber Party Massacre, this film has a flashback sequence during the beginning of the film that just so happens to feature the aforementioned film and the driller killer in a sequence repurposed to give this sequel some backstory. What is interesting about this is that it has literally no bearing or continuity from the first Sorority House Massacre other than taking place in the same house. Why this decision was made is unknown and a little mind-boggling to say the least but it ended up making the film a little better overall and anything that adds to a movie is a good thing.

The script may not have been the greatest but Gail Harris, Melissa Moore, Dana Bentley, Stacia Zhivago and Barbii(?!) did as good a job as they could with it and overall, they made the film much better because it looked like they were having a good time with it whereas in the first, it just looked like the lead actress was simply going through the motions. The standout actor in the film though has to be Peter Spellos who is exceedingly creepy as the next door neighbour who always seems to be peeping on the girls. The guy really gives you the willies and even if there was no killing at all in the movie, Spellos peeping around would be more than enough to classify this as a horror movie. At the end of the day, you cannot go wrong with giving Sorority House Massacre 2 some time. Skip the first one and just watch this one. You will be glad you did.
