The menace of the Dire Wraiths has finally been eliminated from Clairton and so it is almost time for Rom to depart. The Torpedo, the town’s newest resident hero, has been outfitted with tech so that he might be able to see if the Wraiths return, making it redundant for Rom to stay as the rest of the world could use his help. Before he leaves though, Rom must battle the Metal Master and hope he can overcome. It was about time that Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema finally decided to have Rom move on, as the stories were becoming just a little repetitive and stale. The love triangle that was present with Brandy and Steve will possibly no longer be a factor going forward, but there will always be new drama on the horizon and there is nothing saying that he cannot go back for a visit once in a while. The Metal Master is an inspired choice of villain for Rom to fight, though he is not exactly a ‘grade A’ bad guy. The issue had a bit of a horror feel to it when it started out and even later on in the book once Rom and the Master’s spiders entered into battle. They were a little creepy, being gigantic and all and it was nice to see the book try something out that was a little different from the norm. Though it is a little sad to see Rom leave Clairton, one of the biggest losses, possibly, will be the supporting cast. Every great hero has those he can rely on so hopefully, Rom will either make some new friends or Brandy, Steve, the Torpedo and more, will make their return at some point. A good issue made all the better by having Rom finally spread his wings.
