S.P.E.A.R. and The Ascendant take the spotlight in the latest issue of Avengers World much like previous issues have been focusing on the different players in the current game.  We see them before they have even come together with Director Zheng trying to recruit Weather Witch with the promise of things being different than they were with The Dynasty.  She has reservations, but agrees if she can pick her own team and soon it is agreed to.  The book jumps back and forth between then and now and we see everyone come together until it jumps back to the present with S.P.E.A.R. needing help to confront that persistent dragon.  Nick Spencer keeps delivering some solid issues and it is nice to see the various characters in the book explored so thoroughly, this time of course focusing on the new super-team, The Ascendant.  They are made up of some intriguing members, even including a Skrull among them which is perhaps the strangest, yet perhaps the boldest move made in recruiting.  Much like the issue focusing on Euroforce, very little is done to advance the story which is the weakest element of the book.  It is understandable that there is a plan for the book, and sometimes things take a little long in the getting there, but this story has been going on for quite some time now.  While it has never really been boring, nor has it felt like it has dragged on, it is taking quite a while for things to wrap up.  The idea for S.P.E.A.R. is fantastic and it would be really great if other nations in the Marvel Universe also decided to start up peacekeeping task forces to rival that of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Still though, Avengers World has been a fun book and one that keeps you coming back every issue.

Teen Titans Futures End #1

The regular title takes a break this month so that we might see what happened to the Titans during the Futures End period of time, and yet it is a little misleading as none of the regular heroes are featured here.  Instead we get Klarion the Witch Boy, Tempest from Earth 2, Kid Flash from Earth 2, Animal Girl and Heretic.  While they might not be the team we are used to, they are an incredibly exciting bunch and seem to work quite well together.  As a group they are out to stop wrongdoing much like the old team and in this issue, succeed in taking out one target with a corrupt senator the next.  This was a fairly good story tying into the events of the ongoing Futures End book, but it was nowhere near the story readers of the weekly book were expecting.  This should have been the story which detailed the deaths of the Titans during the war and what caused Red Robin to go into hiding.  Perhaps they are saving it for the Earth 2 weekly, or maybe they will even show it in the Futures End weekly book, but this issue was an incredible tease to something everyone was expecting.  Putting that aside, the issue was well done and it is always nice to see some new heroes make their debut and perhaps they will show up elsewhere if we are lucky.
