This issue sees the would-be otherworldly alien who is really Hawkman’s old foe Hastur who is also the reincarnation of Hath-Set and who has come back for vengeance against the winged wonder and to also rule the world, because, why not?  So as the book progresses we are treated to Hawkman’s origin, through his time in Egypt to his rebirth, his meeting Shiera who has also been reincarnated and his first meeting up with the returned Hath-Set as Hastor.  Meanwhile, Hastor is facing Hawkgirl and the Atom and as they try to take the villain down, Hastor recounts his own past and how he lived through the injury sustained by Hawkman and how he came into possession of the ship and technology he now sports.  When all is said and done though, Hawkman and the Squadron come out on top.  Another fantastic issue from DC and our fantastic creative team that caps off the storyline that started last issue and one that provides some backstory on Hawkman and Hawkgirl.  Always good to see an origin issue and this one was done quite well in the context of the current tale.  There is not a whole lot for the rest of the team to do, which is fine as it was more focused than most, but it was full of action and suspense all the same and kept you intrigued through its entirety.  Roy Thomas, Adrian Gonzales and Jerry Ordway give us another rousing tale set during World War II with next issue’s title ominously called ‘Turning Point.’
