Continuing their long trek towards Shamballah, Morgan and company come across a girl who is about to be sacrificed. There is no choice but to save her and that, the three companions do. Learning the reason for the girl’s peril is but a lost mask atop the Tower of Fear, they are then tasked with retrieving it in order to stop future sacrifices. Battling their way through hordes of demons, Morgan and Machiste finally reach the top where Mariah has already beaten them by taking a shortcut from outside the tower. After some laughs and a return of the mask to its owner, the issue ends with a shocking surprise.
While the book is all about Travis Morgan, the eponymous Warlord, it is nice to see Mariah and Machiste get nearly as much of the spotlight as he does. They are interesting characters in their own right and really add to the dynamic of the book and help make Morgan a better character for it. Mike Grell’s pencils are still beautiful to look at, whether it be drawing gorgeous women or demons from the pit, and make you realize how great this book really is. His writing is just as strong, and it keeps you captivated from panel to panel, and always wanting more when every issue is finished. More books should be as good as this.
