Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #32

Artist – Howard Purcell
Inker – Sheldon Moldoff

After some good stories by Ed Herron, this issue of Sea Devils goes back to being uncredited as far as a writer is concerned, though that does not mean Herron could not have written this book. The knowledge of who wrote it has simply been forgotten over time, which truly is a shame. Be that as it may, this was another stellar outing for the team, featuring a little of everything that the uncredited scripter could think of. It all begins with a rescue mission, at least it seems so, until it turns out to be just some divers in need of a little help. A time capsule is what they are looking for, and unsurprisingly, the Sea Devils know exactly where it is. Things are not all they seem, though, as these innocent-looking divers are something else entirely. Ambushed, the Devils discover they have been tricked by aliens who, for whatever reason, need the time capsule and what it holds within. All of this leads to a journey into the future where the team learns that these aliens are simply brainwashed humans who are working for actual aliens. Those aliens have been stealing the Earth’s most precious resource – its water, in order that they might turn the atmosphere into a livable space for their species. The downside is that it leaves none for the flora and fauna, not to mention the humans, that reside on the surface. This was an exceptional tale as far as the Sea Devils go, and they have had some excellent stories over the course of their title. This story is packed with all the things that make this book a winner, whether it’s action, drama, or the fantastical. When the Devils arrive in the future, the tale kicks into high gear as they face a threat that seems almost unreal yet is all too solid. Despite being part of a team, Dane takes the spotlight for most of the story, and as the team leader, it is not exactly a wonder as to why. As it is, the Devils help out humanity in the future so that they might secure their own, and all is well that ends well. They end up back in their own time, take the time capsule, and get rid of the item the aliens wanted so that it might prevent what the aliens did from ever happening again. This was one of the best issues the Sea Devils have partaken in during their entire run and was a lot of fun from start to finish. With the end of the series in sight, one hopes that they go out with a bang like this book, rather than a whimper.
