Kinetic Chaos – Igor and the Lunatics (1985)

Some films defy explanation, and Igor and the Lunatics from Troma Entertainment is one such film. Given the Troma involvement, one would expect some benefits to be derived from this endeavour, and yet, it is easy to say that this is one of the worst movies ever released under their banner.

If there was a script, it is hard to say just what they were aiming to accomplish. There is a cult with numerous members who like to kill, though just what they got together for or what they worship is never made clear. Igor is one of the disciples, and he starts to go off the deep end, making one wonder if he will end up being the leader or if he will simply kill everyone and everything. There is a fair amount of blood to go around and some nudity to keep things moving, which will momentarily please the viewer, but it all seems pointless because the story is so poorly executed. What is evident is that Igor hates women, as he kills them all quite disgustingly and with quite a bit of fervour. Does that necessarily make a bad movie? No, it does not, but when everything else is lacking, it is hard to find anything redeeming. The film is so inept that it even shows the same girl being cut in half twice by a giant table saw. Did she magically come to life later on in the film, only to be killed in the exact same way again?

There is little to love here. The music might be the best thing, and yet, it too is all over the place. There was reportedly more than one director for this picture, which would explain a lot, given the kinetic chaos seen on the screen. There are no characters for the audience to latch onto; everyone, aside from Igor, is sparingly focused upon, if at all. It is a dark film only because there is nothing light within it to be found. Does that make it a horror movie? Most probably, as there is enough gore and blood to warrant it, but it is more sleaziness than anything else.

For those who like sleazey, trashy pictures, Igor and the Lunatics will not disappoint them. Boiling it down, the production was a mess from sound effects to acting, from script to story, direction and everything in between. Troma has a lot of gems in its library. This is not one of them.
