Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #25

Artist – Howard Purcell
Inker – Sheldon Moldoff

A young man races for help, and where does he go, but to the Sea Devils, as they are the only ones who can provide the aid that he and his countrymen need. So it is that he meets the Sea Devils along with their international brethren in their famed headquarters, the hollowed-out statue of Neptimus. They listen to his plight, of the villain named El Supremo who rules the neighbouring country and of how he wishes to claim the oil fields below the waves that run beneath both their lands. The team head out in the statue of Neptimus, opting to do so as the trip is long and their headquarters on two legs can move faster than they would otherwise. Along the way, they encounter trouble, starting with exploding alligators and later with one of their own international members. They try fixing the oil rigs that have been broken, but no matter which way they turn, they are hampered by the forces of El Supremo, who is focused on keeping what he believes is his, no matter who stands in his way. This twenty-fifth issue was a lot of fun; whoever wrote the book did a good job of it. The team is in fine form, and it is good to see that the international members of the Sea Devils are still being used, and that it was not just a one-off plot in a past issue to do something different in the book. While the Devils have continued to face different menaces of late, the makers of this title need to increase the danger felt by them; they need to give the team bigger villains that are more deadly than the usual alien or undersea creature. El Supremo may just be a man, but at least he is giving the Devils a run for their money. It is exactly what they need, especially if they intend to make use of the extended cast. The book is packed with action, and it moves along at a fairly good pace. However, there is little characterization or personal moments to be had other than Judy musing about loving Dane and quite possibly the Man-Fish from previous issues and Dane thinking of his dad, back from the dead as Captain X. As one might guess, and despite being under constant attack, the Sea Devils pick themselves up and manage to get the upper hand against the forces of El Supremo until they end up facing the man himself. All in all, there was nothing that bad about this book, and it entertained from the first page to the last. Good stuff all around.
