Issue by Issue – Justice Society of America #7 (1991)

Writer – Len Strazewski
Artist – Grant Miehm
Inker – Rick Burchett
Colours – Robbie Busch
Letters – Janice Chiang

In the second-to-last issue of the Justice Society’s 1991 series, the band has finally gotten back together, all but Starman, and they will give Vandal Savage the biggest defeat of his life. Those who stand against him are Hawkman, Flash, Black Canary, Green Lantern, and Will Wildeagle. Despite having the edge in numbers, Savage has Solomon Grundy on his side amongst his other thugs and Grundy is as good as ten men. The battle between the two parties is fierce, and Len Strazewski adds some light-hearted banter to keep it moving along at a good pace and keep it from getting a bit too serious given how deadly a foe that Savage can be. The team goes at it as only they can with Flash and Green Lantern standing out more than their counter-parts, though Black Canary does deliver the final shot to take Grundy down. That leaves Savage on his own and yet he manages to make a narrow escape and get behind a force field where he is reunited with his Egyptian artifacts. As all of this was going on, the cowtowed Ted Knight finally decided that he should do something and it is something that he seemed to have been planning so maybe, just maybe, Ted was not as hapless as it would have appeared. What that ends up being will obviously be made known in the final issue of this series, but the anticicpation makes readers want to know immediately. Savage for his part has now come into more power thanks to his artifacts and he calls down the living constellations which turns the tide once more in his direction. The team is a little dumbfounded as to what they will do next.  They know that they have to fight even though the constellations are now at their full power and most likely more than a match for them any day of the week. Strazewski leaves it on a cliffhanger one last time, making readers wait until the next issue to see how this all plays out and though one could guess, one never knows just what the author might have up his sleeve. As for the artwork, it was fairly solid though there were a few panels where the pencils and colour choices were questionable. Thankfully, they never took away from the proceedings and overall, the book ended up being a lot of fun which is the most important goal of any series.
