Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #15

Writer – Ed Herron
Artist – Irv Novick

A submarine goes missing along with its entire crew and that is something that Judy of the Sea Devils cannot abide as her father was the man in charge and now he is being blamed for everything that has happened. While Nicky is quite perturbed by the entire situation as well, it is Judy who really takes a lot of the guilt and blame upon her shoulders even though none of it has anything to do with her. She knows that if she is going to have any peace, she has to find the submarine and her father and prove that he was not to blame for whatever the problem might have been and in a best-case scenario, find everyone alive. For this case, the Sea Devils undergo some rigorous training, all of it contrived by Professor Walton as it just so happens. The man unknowingly provides a plan to aid in his rescue, so, once it is finished, the Devils cook up a proposal on how they intend to find the professor and put it into action. Writer Ed Herron and artist Irv Novick create a very dramatic piece of action with this latest tale as emotions run deep with Judy taking center stage in this story. It is not very often that Judy finds herself leading the team, but in this case, the rest of the Devils follow her lead, making for an interesting dynamic. It would not be a book featuring the Sea Devils if they did not have a bit of the fantastic within its pages and so the team find themselves up against the wall as they search for the missing sub. There must have been a reason why the sub disappeared and it is possible that any number of the sea creatures that the Devils encounter could have been responsible. Finally, after several troubles and travails, the team discovers what happened to the sub and it is at this point, that Judy sacrifices herself for the good of the team and those in the sub. It is a great bit of drama courtesy of Herron and while it might seem tragic, the book has a happy ending and everyone comes out of it okay as was to be expected. Not only does Novick do a great job with the pencils he lays down, but he also appears in the book once again as an artist from DC sent to chronicle the Sea Devils’ latest adventure for avid readers. This plot device has been used quite a few times now and where it was novel at first, it is becoming tired and overdone at this point. Hopefully, Herron stops using it and other than that one thing, this was quite the fun issue, packed with action and more than enough drama to keep even the casual reader hooked from start to finish.
