Robert Kanigher and Russ Heath present an entertaining tale with the latest Sea Devils issue called 4 Mysteries of the Sea. It all begins with Neptune in a bad mood as he vows that the wildest tales told by any who frequent his undersea kingdom will end up coming true. Readers automatically know that this is going to apply to the Sea Devils in some fashion which happens in the next couple of pages as they try to become members of the Deep Six Liars Club. Entry means making the club members believe a lie, yet as each member of the team steps up, their stories are far too wild for any sane person to put any stock in. The Sea Devils are dejected but they mean to come back and try again, it simply means they will have to think up something a little better than what they came in with. Kanigher soon sends the players in this tale on a mission to recover a wedding ring from a dam. It might not be an ocean dive but it is still something only the Devils can accomplish and so they set off the next day. From this point on, the book circles around to where it began with Neptune’s promise and all of those tall tales that the Sea Devils tried to tell at the Deep Six Liars Club start to come true one after the other. Heath and Kanigher give readers an adventure in a ghost town suddenly underwater, one that hides lost gold and where they have to fend off pirates. Another sees the team fending off a giant octopus deep below the ocean with the return of Pappy the sea lion who rescues them while a third sees Biff meet up with some Martians who think he is just the funniest thing they ever saw. With three tall tales coming true, it only remains to see if Dane’s does as well and who would have ever thought that it would when after saving Neptune from some depth charges, Dane actually gets to shake the god’s hand. It was quite nice to see the authors of this story change things up quite a bit from the usual underwater adventures that the Sea Devils usually end up going on. There would be a lot of action which would set it all at a good pace and by the conclusion, there would be a couple of laughs as well as the Devils would be refused entrance once again to the Deep Six Liars Club. They are of course shocked yet again but it requires that they make their audience believe a lie, not a lie that became real. A funny bit for sure in a book that usually does not feature a lot of humour and shows Kanigher can keep it light once in a while.
