Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #9

Writer – Robert Kanigher
Artist – Russ Heath

In a feature-length tale by Robert Kanigher and Russ Heath, the Sea Devils do something a little different than their usual search and rescue mission as this one requires a bit of paragliding. Out of their wheelhouse or not, the Devils take to the skies like it is old hat and complete their task with no trouble at all. This all leads to a bit of rest and relaxation and more than a bit of fun until their services are again required. Of all the things that Kanigher would have the Devils tackle, an atomic bomb is not something that readers would have thought to see and yet, here they are trying to place one just perfectly below the waves when trouble rears its head and the team is stuck below the bomb in a cavern. If they fail to find a way out, they will have made their last dive so it is lucky that a whirlpool of sorts captures them and sucks them down into the ocean below the ocean. In all their travels, the Sea Devils never realized that there was a second ocean below the more familiar one and it is here that they meet a most strange creature. In his thrall, the Devils hear the coral monster’s tale, of how he was banished from his own planet and of how it crashed upon the Earth, deep below the ocean and through the crust to the ocean underneath it. It is here that the creature has remained ever since and now that he finally has company, the coral monster means to make the most of it. What follows is one of the most exciting and action-packed stories that has taken place in this title so far. While the book has never been lacking for the surreal or the fantastical and it has always had its fair share of adventure and action, this tale by Kanigher and Heath is one of the best yet. The Devils are put through tests and they are both formidable and dangerous. One has to wonder just how it is that they can overcome what most would surely fail but readers know that the Sea Devils are probably the best divers around. They have had their fair share of obstacles in the past, some just as deadly as these. Kudos must be given to Mr. Kanigher for coming up with such a fun story and Mr. Heath for making it all come to startling life with his incredible pencils, some of his best yet on this book. Thankfully, it concludes with a happy ending though readers know that they can expect more of the same come the next issue.
