Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #7

Writer – Robert Kanigher
Artist – Russ Heath

A rocket has been sent to space to gather data yet something has gone wrong and contact is lost. Soon it is crashing back to earth and it is up to the Sea Devils to help out the astronauts aboard in case they are hurt or worse. When Dane and Biff reach the capsule underwater, they realize there are no astronauts within and yet, there is something that believe it or not, is water. If there is one thing that should not be in the capsule, it is water and yet there is and when they investigate, they discover that the water is sentient and some kind of alien. Said alien looks to gather intelligence of its own, to find out if the Earth’s oceans can support life, at least as far as his people are concerned. Dane and Biff put up a fight but it all seems for naught until they realize that to defeat said creature, or at the very least, to get away, they need to act without thinking as the alien is telepathic. Written by Robert Kanighter and drawn by the legendary Russ Heath, the book is packed full of action and it features the toughest challenge to hit the Sea Devils yet as they face a foe who essentially knows their every move as they think it. How can one overcome something like that? Dane believes that if they just act without thinking, and trust their instincts, they will be able to defeat the creature but that is easier said than done, especially considering the four of them have to be on the same page every step of the way. Heath does an excellent job of making this book as exciting as possible and the panels flow one into the other as if one were watching a film. While Heath has been on the book from the very first issue, this is perhaps his finest work yet and it is hard not to go back and pour over every page without finishing the story first. Kanigher for his part, crafts a fun tale and one of the most interesting to be featured in this title. As a villain, the water alien might be quite formidable but there is a point in the story where it gives away its own defeat and thereby saves the Earth even though it still takes the Sea Devils a bit of time to beat the creature. While it was never in doubt, the monster did give the Devils one of their greatest trials yet. Going forward, it will be intriguing to see if Kanigher can continue to outdo himself and create even deadlier perils for the heroes to face in future issues.
