Issue by Issue – Sea Devils #3

Writer – Bob Haney, Robert Kanigher
Artist – Russ Heath

A trio of tales grace the pages of this comic with the first finding the Sea Devils up against a modern Nero, or so he thinks of himself. When an undercover agent is murdered before them, the Devils swear to take up his cause and find out who the smugglers are and where they are moving their product. It can only be underwater and as they search, they get an invite from Nero to perform at a party he is throwing. They refuse and soon find themselves battling for their lives for Nero and his underworld compatriots below the waves and at a disadvantage. As it is, they manage to win each fight, defeat Nero and put a stop to the smugglers. There is another short Battle Diary entry that lasts but a page until the book moves on to its final story entitled “The Ghost of the Deep.” There is a little lighthearted ribbing at Judy’s expense when the tale begins, only for her to give it right back to the boys which also turns out to be a premonition for that which is to come. That all comes about when the Sea Devils head out to some new water, a place where they have never been and though they are careful, they are sucked down in a whirlpool, as deep as they have ever gone and it is there that the men find themselves enchanted by a real live siren, perhaps Circe herself. She wants the Devils to bring her back some treasure and whoever brings back the best bit will receive a kiss. Judy is dumbfounded and not under the same spell, so she does what she can to help her teammates out but wonders if it will be enough. Bob Haney and Robert Kanigher deliver some truly fun stories in this book, the two of them giving readers something a little different with each adventure. It is always good to see the Devils go up against both a human menace and those undersea creatures they always tend to swim into. The modern Nero made for a good villain even if he did not do very much himself, leaving it all to his goons but one can see the man coming back at some future point if he can get himself out of his legal entanglements. As for the siren, she is definitely one of the more attractive monsters the team has ever run into but also one of the most dangerous. If not for Judy, the team may not have lasted much longer and who knows if she would be the siren’s next target once they were gone. With some truly fantastic pencils from Russ Heath who really makes the book what it is, this issue had everything a person could want.
