Issue by Issue – Secret Six #3 (1968)

Writer – E. Nelson Bridwell, Joe Gill
Artist – Jack Sparling

The book opens up with authors Joe Gill and E. Nelson Bridwell introducing the cast to the reader once again as each of them finds their lives in danger. Each member is featured on a single spread by artist Jack Sparling and the man does a great job of making each one quite exciting. The first is King Savage followed by Crimson Dawn, Carlo Di Rienzi, Lili De Neuve and August Durant. The final member is Mike Tempest or Tiger Force as he is better known, a former boxer and he, unlike the others, has not had an attempt made on his life. So it is that the Secret Six decide to keep watch on each other as they think the attempts were made to kill off their leader, Mockingbird whose identity has been kept secret thus far. Soon enough though, Mike is kidnapped by none other than the Syndicate, those whom he had betrayed in another life and things finally become just a little more clear than they were previously. The authors of this tale do a good job of telling a fairly engaging story, one that delves into the past of the man called Tiger Force and it is good to see them flesh out one of the characters more than previously seen. This also paves the way for further characterization of the other team members, seeing how far they will go for their teammates and how much they care, for after working together for a spell, it is only natural that feelings of friendship eventually make themselves known. This was not the most thrilling of issues, even if it was only the third one to be published, though Sparling does draw some very electric scenes that make the latter half of the book fly by with excitement. As it is, the Syndicate fails to kill Mike for his betrayal, they fail to kill Mockingbird even though it turned out like he was most likely never a target and in the end, they get routed by both the police and the Secret Six ending their reign in the criminal underground. When it comes to the team, they are still a little wary of each other, not being sure who their leader is yet sure enough that it is probably one of them. Who that person is is a mystery, and figuring it out continues to be just as hard as it was when they first met. Finally, as to where this all leads, it still remains to be seen but it is sure to be another mission and one that will call their specific skills into play.
