Night of the Mummy finds Margo Lane and The Shadow in an old Mayan temple, though the why for that is never given but it does see them facing down an honest-to-goodness mummy, something not seen outside of Egypt. Said mummy is looking to put the hurt on the archaeological company that has discovered said walking corpse so it is quite the bit of luck that The Shadow is there to put a stop to the creature. After a little tussle with both the monster and a few of the natives, a man lies dead and the mummy lies as cold as stone in the tomb as if it had never moved in the first place. A plane ride back to America sees another man dead at the hands of the mummy, or so the author would have readers think with Margo wondering just which one of the passengers could be The Shadow, if any. From this point on, Denny O’Neil continues to play the mummy and The Shadow against one another though there is, of course, a deeper mystery about it all. Like all of the previous tales in this series, this was well-written and definitely captivated the reader but there was one small downside to it and that was the speed with which it was all tied up. Up until the last few pages, O’Neil would spin a fun yarn but it felt like it was missing something, a small piece of the story that would better explain just how it was that The Shadow deduced the real villain of it all, aside from knowing that mummies who have lain dead for thousands of years should not be able to get up and walk around, much less kill people. The conclusion was definitely rushed and it is not the first time that it has happened in this title and yet, each tale still manages to work even if it feels like something is off. Making this all even better is Frank Robbins who continues to provide some powerhouse pencils that really make the story pop, this time with a bit of horror on the page to accompany the pulp-style action usually portrayed in the title. For a good chunk of the story, everyone is quite convinced that the mummy is real, that is somehow still alive and killing people left and right. Thankfully, The Shadow never fell for the ruse and was able to take care of business though why he and Margo were out of the country in the first place is another mystery to be solved another day.
