While more crime thriller than horror, Blood Link could be a light giallo if anything though it does hint at the supernatural given the ending. It is ultimately a hodge-podge of genres and can never quite stay the course of what it wants to be and yet, given that, it does draw the audience in for one never quite knows where it is going even though it can be pretty evident at times.
Part of that draw is Michael Moriarty who stars as both hero and villain, a man playing his own twin. It begins with Moriarty the good doctor, a man who is trying to help people by testing his treatments on himself and that leads to him having quite disturbing visions. He believes that what he sees is through
the eyes of his Siamese twin and as the film moves on, it turns out he is right. Said brother is murdering left and right, anyone that he can as long as he can get away with it. Soon the doctor flies to Germany in order to confront his brother and while most would be happy to be reunited with their long-lost relative, such is no the case here. More death follows until a desperate plan is hatched by the doctor’s girlfriend and she takes care of business. Or does she?
For the most part, this was an interesting picture, Moriarty doing a fair job at playing a serial killer and while good, he has always been better as a babyface, being a good guy perhaps just coming more naturally to him than that of a heel. The rest of the cast including Penelope Milford are quite able as well, all of them putting in solid performances thanks to a decent story and a steady hand from director Alberto De Martino. The man crafts an
interesting, if slow-moving thriller filled with a lot of kills, a lot of nudity and just a bit of blood to keep the audience intrigued. Milford herself is shown in her birthday suit a few times and uses all of her wiles to bring down evil twin Keith so that his murder spree might come to a halt. The amount of nudity was fine and for the most part, justified in its use but there could have been a lot more blood and the kills could have been a little more inventive yet Martino made it slick enough that in the end, it really did not matter all that much.
If there was one thing that could have spruced this movie up a bit more and made it far more memorable than it might have been, it would have been to make the antagonist a little less sad-sack and a bit more maniacal. As far as villains go, Moriarty’s was not as evil as he could have been. That aside, the film had a lot going for it like a soundtrack from Ennio Morricone of all people, a veteran director who wove this story of two brothers into a captivating bit of celluloid and an ending that will make the audience wonder and leave them wondering. Not bad at all when one thinks about it.
