Tigen Inc. is a company that tests various products on animals, and for the sake of this film those animals, or the ones that pertain to this movie, are cats. Some of those cats have gone and mutated into monster cats it seems and they like to kill. One would never know it though as for most of this movie, there are no cats, monstrous or otherwise, to be seen and that is the greatest sin that Mutator commits. How can one have a monster movie without any monsters?
The story elements are here to make a good schlocky monster film, yet the makers of this affair, probably hampered by budget, fail to deliver the goods until the very end of the picture. While most will say that it was too little too late to engage them, those who love cheese may enjoy this movie quite a bit.
As it all moves along, there is always that ‘what will happen next’ element to it. Even though little happens, unless one has seen this before, one has to assume that something will and that does manage to keep its audience watching for the genre demands it. Eventually, people start to get killed off but it is usually off-screen with nary a sight of the monster responsible. When the cat-creature does finally make an appearance, the special effects are not up to par which is probably the nicest way to put it. Surprisingly though, they are also not the worst practical effects to ever hit the big screen and thus it is, at the very least, palatable with a
person’s imagination making up for what is lacking.
Brion James, usually the baddie whenever he appears is cast as the protagonist of the film and it is good to see the man do something a little different, flexing different muscles as it were. The only sad thing about it is that it had to be in this picture, a movie made better by him but not worthy of him either. Also starring would be Embeth Davidtz, a woman who would go on to star in various films of much higher calibre than this one but it is interesting to see her at the beginning of her career despite the material.
As for the horror, it is fairly non-existent though there is a bit of suspense here and there to carry the viewer through. If there had been more blood, a little more a few more grisly elements, the entire movie would have been better for it and so would the audience. Summing it up, the only thing that really makes this picture as bad as it is are the things that are not here and that is a shame. Still, for the curious, there may be enough here to slightly entertain.
