Issue by Issue – Justice Inc. #4

Writer – Denny O’Neil, Paul Levitz
Artist – Jack Kirby
Inker – Mike Royer

In this final issue of Justice Inc., Richard Benson, the erstwhile Avenger, is in the sky flying a plane with Josh and Smitty, trying to discover just why it is a lot of commercial planes have been crashing. Perhaps by being in the thick of it so to speak, they might have better luck in their investigation than they would on the ground. Such as it is, they manage to spot a plane in distress after it is hit by a flock of birds, promptly blowing up. They zoom over hoping to catch sight of any survivors and parachute down when a bunch of men in a speedboat rush up and start spraying bullets into the ocean and the people who struggle there. Benson will not have it and soon the men that fire the shots pay for it, though not before he gets some information out of them. With a combination of info gleaned from the criminals and the calculations of chemist Fergus MacMurdie, it leads the Avenger to Olympia Laboratories and its boss Jason Lynn. While it seems like it might be a dead end, Benson and Smitty manage to get another clue which leads them to Trans-Am, an airline in financial trouble and an owner who will do anything to get himself out of it. Helming this issue are Denny O’Neil, Jack Kirby and Mike Royer once again though Paul Levitz manages to lend a hand in its creation. It finds the Avenger and Justice Incorporated doing what they do best and it ends up being a fairly enjoyable book with the story being somewhat simplistic yet compelling and effective, helped immensely by the artwork of Kirby and Royer. As for that artwork, it is far from the best that Kirby has ever released but still good enough to convey all the action and emotion needed to make it worth reading. This being the last issue, it would have been nice to see something a little more high-stakes, ending the book with a bang as it were but this was perfectly fine and definitely better than nothing. This was a decent little series overall but if looking for tales of the Avenger, the books will service one far better.
