Inker – Mike Royer

A man named Colonel Sodom is used to getting what he wants when he wants it and yet, another man named Fergus MacMurdie does not like to be told what to do which opens the book with a clash between two very strong-willed individuals. While the Avenger manages to show up and try to put a stop to it, it is far too late for the woman that Fergus calls wife as she is transformed into a monster thanks to the serum Colonel Sodom wanted him to work on. Because of this, Fergus joins up with Justice Inc. and Richard Benson, the stone-faced Avenger has already come up with a plan for catching Sodom and it involves the power he has to mould his face into that of anyone he chooses. Denny O’Neil who is joined by Jack Kirby once again, tells a fun tale, this one packed with action more so than the previous issues and the book flies by at a fairly rapid pace. The Avenger does not want to waste any time in trying to put Sodom away for as long as that man is loose, innocent lives will be in danger. Making it even worse is that strange chemical he has that when in a gaseous form, transforms those close enough to it into monsters. How such a thing came to be is never explained nor does it need to be. One simply accepts it as fact and then wonders just how it is that Justice Incorporated is going to deal with such a concoction. As it is, Kirby’s pencils look great, the man no slouch when it comes to making the page look exciting and he does just that, making this book far better than it might have been otherwise. The story itself is not bad but it is nothing that has not been seen before as Colonel Sodom is a fairly run-of-the-mill villain, though the serum he carries definitely makes him someone not to be trifled with, at least at first. Suffice it to say and as if there were ever any doubt, the heroes pull out a win and the ending is actually a little shocking which made for the perfect send-off. All in all, this was a very fun outing for the Avenger and his Justice Inc., yet with him making more allies all the time, he needs more credible challenges to really showcase what he is all about.
