Issue by Issue – Captain Action #4

Writer – Gil Kane
Artist – Gil Kane

Dr. Evil is not happy about his defeat recently at the hands of Captain Action and he means to accomplish that which he set out to do – usher in the next phase of humanity. To do that though requires a little more thinking on his part and he needs to get rid of Captain Action as well. So it is that he reaches out with his mind, seeking something throughout the cosmos, unsure of what he will find until he does and soon enough he comes across a planet with beings much like himself, though different in many ways. Dr. Evil is fascinated, as much as he can be these days and if he could live out his time on this planet with these people so much like him, he would do just that but they are on a clock and it counts down to their deaths. They have not created or innovated or done much of anything in many hundreds of years and that dismays Dr. Evil to no end, to find a race of beings like them consigned to their fate. To this end, he decides to use them and their incredible inventions against the people of Earth and against Captain Action. Not only that, he uses Carl, Captain Action’s own son against him in an act of sabotage which brings forth monsters into their lab and that is when things go from promising experiment to terrible reality. Gil Kane writes a cracking tale with this issue, a continuation of the Dr. Evil storyline that finds the villain pulling out all the stops in order to eradicate what he determines to be vermin – humanity. Illustrated by Kane as well, the man makes a wonder of this issue, his artwork a real highlight from panel layout to character design and it shines through on every page. There is a lot of action and a lot to love throughout as Captain Action does his best to fend off the monstrous creatures called forth from Alpha Centura before they kill and destroy everything in the city. On top of that, even should he be able to, there is the question of all the natural disasters taking place, those brought on by alien technology and it finally gets to a point where the Alpha Centurans forsake Dr. Evil and reverse everything that has happened thus far. So it is that Kane concludes it all with a happy ending but Dr. Evil vows revenge and he is sure to do just that at some point. Big stakes, drama, action and even a bit of heartache make this issue of Captain Action the best one yet.
